Davy Jones is the evil, elusive, undead ruler of the sea. The common expression of being "sent to Davy Jones' locker" implies death at sea, or forfeiting one's soul to the ruler of the depths. Sailors and pirates who are "sent" to his "locker" are given a choice between death or serving on his ship, the Flying Dutchman, for 100 years.

As the legend goes, Davy Jones, out of grief for his lost love, carved out his heart and locked it in a chest. As part of his curse, he is only able to travel on land once every ten years. Davy Jones also has the power to sumon the Kraken, a large and power squid-like sea monster that destroys ships and sends its crew to him where he offers them a place on his ship.

His heart, locked away and buried on an island, is said to be able to give anyone who posesses it power over Davy Jones, and thus, power over the sea. It is in pursuit by Jack, who owes a debt to Davy Jones; Will, who wishes to free his father and everyone on the Flying Dutchman; Norrington, who will trade it to Lord Culter for a letter of Marque; and Lord Cutler, who wishes control over the sea for business purposes. The key to the chest is kept with Davy Jones at all times. He guards it with his life, for if anyone were to get ahold of his heart, he would no longer be invulnerable.
